A 48.4% Macallan release combining European and American oak with honey, citrus and structured spice.

Overview

The Macallan Edition No. 4 is the fourth release in the distillery’s annual Edition Series. Introduced in 2018, it was created to mark the opening of The Macallan’s new distillery and to reflect the structural design, craftsmanship and oak-led whisky making associated with the estate.

The Spirit

Edition No. 4 is a non-age-statement Speyside single malt composed from a selection of European and American oak casks. Bottled at 48.4% ABV, it carries a natural burnished copper colour and was designed to show how different oak types contribute structure, sweetness and aromatic complexity.

The nose presents rounded honey, sweet apple and orange zest, supported by ginger, nutmeg, mature oak, green wood and restrained floral notes. The palate develops nutmeg, wood spice, green clove and vanilla, with a viscous texture and a long finish of fruit and oaky sweetness.

Why It Matters

Edition No. 4 connects The Macallan’s established focus on cask selection with an important architectural moment in the distillery’s history. Its release coincided with the opening of the new Speyside distillery, allowing the whisky to serve as both a study of oak composition and a record of the estate’s transition into a new production era.

Within the Edition Series, it is distinguished by its emphasis on structure. The combination of European and American oak creates a profile that balances honeyed sweetness and citrus with firmer spice, clove and seasoned wood.

Serving & Context

Serve neat initially and allow at least ten minutes in the glass for the honey, citrus and oak spice to develop.

At 48.4% ABV, a small amount of water may soften the clove and nutmeg while revealing additional apple, vanilla and floral character.

Availability Note

The Macallan Edition No. 4 is a discontinued archival release from the completed Edition Series. Bottles now circulate through specialist whisky merchants, established auction houses and private collections.
