A single-estate Barbados rum from Mount Gay, made from the 2018 estate harvest and bottled at 55% ABV.

Overview

Mount Gay Single Estate Series Release 2, formally 24_02_Vt18d2, is the second expression in Mount Gay’s Single Estate Series. Produced in St Lucy, Barbados, it was released in 2024 and made from 100% sugar cane grown on the Mount Gay Estate.

This release is the first vintage expression in the series, drawn from the 2018 estate harvest, whereas the first release combined two harvest years.

The Spirit

Mount Gay Single Estate Series Release 2 was created from molasses made with sugar cane grown at the Mount Gay Estate. The molasses underwent an extended fermentation of around nine days before distillation.

The rum was fully distilled in copper pot stills and matured in American oak ex-bourbon barrels. The designation 24_02_Vt18d2 refers to the 2024 release year, the second release in the series, the 2018 vintage harvest and the use of distillates from two distinct pot still distillations.

Bottled at 55% ABV and non-chill filtered, it carries a light golden colour. The profile includes grapefruit, sweet plum, banana, spice, almond, sea salt and a slight milk chocolate note, moving into brown sugar, oak, grapefruit, floral notes and a lightly salty smokiness.

Why It Matters

Release 2 is significant because it moves the Single Estate Series into single-harvest territory. It reflects Mount Gay’s estate-led approach after the acquisition of 324 acres across the historical Mount Gay and Oxford Estates, which allowed the distillery to operate from cane to bottle again.

Its relevance lies in the combination of Barbados estate-grown cane, extended fermentation, copper pot still distillation, ex-bourbon maturation and vintage-specific character.

Serving & Context

Best approached neat, in line with the producer’s suggested serve. Time in the glass is useful, allowing the fruit, oak, saline and pot still notes to settle. A small amount of water may be used with restraint given the 55% ABV.

Availability Note

Mount Gay Single Estate Series Release 2 was released in a stated outturn of 5,418 bottles worldwide, with 1,200 allocated to the United States. Remaining examples generally circulate through specialist rum merchants, private cellars and secondary-market channels
