A cask strength Barbados rum from Mount Gay, blending Tawny Port and American whiskey cask maturation.

Overview

Mount Gay The Port Cask Expression is part of the distillery’s Master Blender Collection, produced in Barbados under the direction of Master Blender Trudiann Branker. It was created as a small-batch release using Tawny Port casks, a cask type Mount Gay notes is not typically used in its rum making.

The release combines column still and copper pot still rums, with maturation split between Tawny Port casks and American whiskey casks before final blending.

The Spirit

Mount Gay The Port Cask Expression is bottled at cask strength, 55% ABV, and is non-chill filtered to preserve natural colour and aroma. The blend brings together column still rum aged for five years in Tawny Port casks with double-distilled copper pot still rum aged for 14 years in American whiskey casks, then finished for one year in Tawny Port casks.

The result is an amber rum with tawny hues. The profile carries vanilla, caramel, almond and dried fruit on the nose, moving into cherry, dried fruit, oak, spice, prune, currants and almond on the palate.

Why It Matters

The Port Cask Expression is significant within Mount Gay’s limited releases because it shows the distillery working with a fortified wine cask style outside its more traditional Barbados rum maturation framework. The combination of column still rum, aged pot still rum, American whiskey cask maturity and Tawny Port influence gives the release a layered structure.

Its relevance lies in the contrast between Mount Gay’s established distillation styles and the fruit, almond, oak and spice influence of Tawny Port casks.

Serving & Context

Best approached neat, in line with the producer’s suggested serve. A short rest in the glass is useful, allowing the Port cask fruit, pot still weight and oak spice to settle. Given the 55% ABV, a small amount of water may be used with restraint.

Availability Note

Mount Gay The Port Cask Expression was released as a small batch in a stated outturn of 6,570 bottles worldwide. Remaining examples generally circulate through specialist rum merchants, private cellars and secondary-market channels
