A Lunar New Year presentation of Benriach’s triple-cask matured 12-year-old Speyside single malt.

Overview

Benriach 12 Year Old Year of the Dragon Edition was released for the 2024 Lunar New Year, pairing the distillery’s established unpeated 12-year-old expression with commemorative presentation packaging.

The release retains the core character of The Twelve while placing it within a market-specific seasonal context.

The Spirit

Matured for at least 12 years in a combination of sherry casks, bourbon barrels and Port casks, the whisky is bottled at 46% ABV and presented without chill filtration.

Its profile combines baked forest fruits, maple honey and cocoa, followed by sultana, gentle spice and mocha through the finish. The use of three cask types gives the whisky a layered style, balancing fruit sweetness, oak-derived richness and restrained chocolate notes.

Why It Matters

The Year of the Dragon Edition reflects Benriach’s use of established core whisky in limited cultural and seasonal presentations. Rather than introducing a separate liquid, the release places The Twelve within the visual language of the 2024 Lunar New Year.

It also demonstrates the role of presentation-led releases in broadening the context of familiar distillery expressions without altering their underlying production profile.

Serving & Context

Best served neat initially, with several minutes in the glass to allow the fruit, honey and cocoa notes to develop.

A small amount of water may soften the oak and bring forward additional dried fruit and spice.

Availability Note

Released as a limited 2024 Lunar New Year edition, the bottling is no longer part of Benriach’s standard presentation range. Remaining examples may still appear through specialist whisky merchants, selected Australian retailers and secondary-market channels.
