Overview
The Glendronach Aged 56 Years is a Highland single malt Scotch whisky released in 2026 to mark the beginning of the distillery’s 200th anniversary celebrations. Distilled in September 1968, it is the oldest official bottling released in The Glendronach’s history and was limited to 200 individually presented decanters worldwide.
The Spirit
The whisky was distilled in September 1968 and initially matured in three Spanish oak Oloroso sherry butts within The Glendronach’s traditional dunnage warehouses. In 2014, after approximately 46 years, the spirit was transferred into three Spanish oak Pedro Ximénez hogsheads for its final period of maturation. This extended secondary maturation continued until the whisky was bottled at 56 years of age.
It was bottled at natural cask strength at 44.9% ABV. The producer describes an antique walnut colour, with dark fruits, cacao and sherry character leading the aroma, followed by caramelised date, oud wood and blackberry compote. Black cherry, tonka bean and raisin develop across the palate alongside dark chocolate and mandarin.
Why It Matters
The Glendronach 56 Year Old is historically significant as the oldest whisky released by the distillery in its two-century history. Its importance extends beyond age alone. The maturation records the development of spirit distilled in 1968 through two markedly different forms of Spanish sherry oak, beginning with long-term Oloroso maturation before an unusually extended twelve-year period in Pedro Ximénez hogsheads.
The release also provides a rare example of active cask management at extreme age. Rather than leaving the whisky in its original Oloroso butts for its entire life, the 2014 transfer allowed Pedro Ximénez oak to reshape the final stage of maturation while the spirit still retained sufficient strength and structure to continue ageing.
Serving & Context
Serve neat in a small measure and allow substantial time in the glass. At 44.9% ABV and after more than five decades in oak, water is unnecessary initially and should be introduced only sparingly if desired, allowing the mature fruit, cacao, sherry and oak character to remain intact.

Released globally in 2026, The Glendronach Aged 56 Years was limited to exactly 200 examples, one for each year of the distillery’s history. Each whisky is housed in a hand-blown Glencairn crystal decanter and presented in a bespoke hand-carved American black walnut cabinet created by wood sculptor John Galvin.
